‘Pinocchio’ by Guillermo del Toro – New Netflix poster recalls ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’

Spoiler warning: This article mentions the setting and plot details.

An Unexpected Hulu Element hellraiserdirected by david bruckner (the house of the night, The ritual), is his distinctive ’90s horror vibe.

That feels more like hellraiserThe third act of Roland Voight, where the Cenobites and the remaining humans face off in (Goran Visnjic) Intricate mansion that doubles as a puzzle box.

Speaking to Bloody Disgusting about the film, Bruckner confirmed the ’90s horror tone and explained the architectural elements.

We definitely wanted there to be a ’90s vibe.”, Bruckner verified. “I didn’t know what it would mean to go back to something that I would necessarily define as the ’80s, but a lot of it was in the way that Ben [Lovett] and walked over to the sheet music. And just sometimes, the way the instrumentation crawled through the cuts and the engagement with bold themes. Not just the old Chris Young themes, but also some of the new ones that Ben used that will often be looking for something melodic and reflective of a character’s emotional state and indicative of what we’re looking at or what theme the beat is necessarily on. .”

Bruckner continues: “With the production designer, kathrin ederwith whom we work the house of the nightour first conversations revolved around finding a path to voice opulence. I think for myself hellraiser It was about that line between the abhorrent and the flashy, the glamorous and the repulsive, and feeling that irony present in the cenobites. I feel that if you look at the original hellraiser movie, can be so abrasive at first glance that it takes time, or at least it took me, to understand the angelic qualities of the cenobites or many of the coded thematic elements that were present. I think I was too young the first time I saw it to understand all that.

“With this, we wanted to find beauty and horror together in a more open way. Part of this is just delivering what excites us, where hellraiser he’s concerned with a broader palette and wants to find that in both the Cenobite designs and the design. Voight’s mansion seemed like a place where we could run with it. It was something Kathrin Eder had fun with.”

But was the Dark Castle appearance of Voight’s mansion intentional? Surprisingly not.

I have to admit that I have never seen Thirteen ghostsBruckner says. “You are not the first person to say that. So maybe I should go see him now. I know my wife is a huge fan of that movie and she said the same thing.”

Both hellraiser Y the house of the night They have houses designed to trap entities. When asked about the connection and if the house of the night naturally led to this project, the filmmaker’s response highlighted a particular interest of his in horror that he hopes will manifest a new subgenre.

Bruckner tells us: “I think it’s circumstantial. There was a spirit trick trap in the house of the night that had something to do with architectural horror, which is a subgenre that I hope you understand, if it’s not already defined, it’s something that fascinates me. With this, I think the idea was present in David Goyer’s original treatment and was a way of motivating the later half of Voight’s journey, to keep it a bit vague. But no, it made sense to me. It was an idea that excited me. I like to keep a mind on the geography in horror. It seems to me that often you approach a scene, one of the first questions is, is the audience aware of where the door is? Can you paint the room in your mind? Even if we focus on the characters for a moment, does the grammar that unfolds give you context for what’s going on? That’s always something that really excites me.

“In this case, it felt appropriate because there is so much to see in Kathrin Eder’s design, and the house plays a role in the narrative. There is a mystery to unravel there. Hopefully, you’re stuck in the corners of the frame, watching and considering how it might come into play in the future. It felt very boxy puzzle. Nightmare logic is something that doesn’t always have to be literally surreal. Sometimes, they can be just echoes of the same patterns and formations that take place in history in different ways.

“I think all of that was something that felt appropriate.”
